Whether it's after a hurricane, tornado, hailstorm or thunderstorm, checking your roof for damage when you endure any type of severe weather makes a big difference in being prepared for the next one. Identifying roof damage is a simple process that can prolong the life of your house. Here's how you do it.

Roof Checking Basics

For safety reasons, don't climb on the roof to look for damage - hire a professional to do that for you. You can find most of the damage from the ground, however, so walk the parameter of your home and look at the condition of your shingles, gutters, exhaust pipes, and the seams where the roof meets the walls.

Be Wary of the Wind

Of all the elements in a storm, wind is the one that is the enemy to your roof. Gusts of 50 mph or more can lift it like a sailcloth, allowing moisture to get inside the walls and affect the structural integrity of your home. Look at the walls and roof beams inside the attic in the daytime. Do any unusual pockets of light peek through? Are there any signs of water stains on the walls or ceiling? If yes, then you'll need to get your roof repaired or replaced in some cases.

Know When to Tag Team

If you find damage on your roof, contact your home insurance agent right away. Then, look for an experienced roofer who can repair the damage for you. It's important to find a knowledgeable roofing company you can trust. Remember, the quality of the roof repair will affect the structural quality of your home in the long run.
